How Students Use Facebook Groups to Learn

“No Name Yet” is a closed group for students from Myanmar. Created 3 months ago, this group now has 51 members, mainly from different regions of Myanmar.

Members can share not only academic subjects, but also things that are good for others, like inspirations, study tips, philosophies, ideas and culture.

Sai Thunn Khay and his friend and partner, Htet Oo Wai Yan, are 16 years old. They created this group to connect all their friends at the beginning. Then they want to develop this group for students, so they can have a place to share and exchange what they are interested and learned. For example, a Biology student can share what he learned or knew. He can write an article about biology. There is no subject limitation. Members can share not only academic subjects, but also things that are good for others, like inspirations, study tips, philosophies, ideas and culture.

For instance, most of group posts are published by Sai Thunn Khay and Htet Oo. All the content is about education. They shared what they have learned from school and also from other places. They encourage also other members to post and share in the group, but only a few do. The reason why they don’t post is the language. Many members cannot write in English.

Members get much knowledge in different fields.

The content shared in this community varies: computer science, nature, mathematics, quotes, economics… There are also some games to encourage members’ participation. For example, somebody started a post with a word and the first commenter needed to start the comment with the last letter of the word. The next one did the same (ex. Sympathy-Yahoo-Opportunity…). With this word game, they had fun and learned English.

Most posts are seen by more than half of group members. Many left their feedbacks by reactions. Sometimes, there are also discussions. From this group, members get much knowledge in different fields.

In future, his friends and he will post more, improve the group, engage and serve better its members.

For exchange and networking, the group admins have also made and shared in the group a members’ profiles list, including information of their names, cities, schools, education, interests, hobbies, group position (admin, moderator or member) and email. In the header of the list, there is a “group motto”: a chain is no stronger than its weakest link… the strength of a group depends on each individual member.

At this moment, Sai Thunn Khay is preparing to attend the university and doesn’t have much time to participate in group management. In future, his friends and he will post more, improve the group, engage and serve better its members.
