How to Make Your Facebook Groups Searchable
Facebook Groups are great to build communities, connect people and make exchanges. To grow your groups and get more members, it is important to make sure that people can find your groups on Facebook. Here are 4 tips to make your groups searchable.
1. Choose the right privacy setting
The first thing you need to do is to set the right privacy setting. There are 3 types: public, closed and secret.
If you set your groups as secret groups, your groups cannot get found.
To let people find your groups, you should set them as public or closed groups. If your groups are public groups, people can find them when they search groups. They can also find your groups when they search some key words and see your group posts. While if your groups are closed groups, people can find your groups when they search groups, but they cannot see your group posts when they do key words research.
2. Name your group appropriately and add a group description
The way you name and describe your group affects how it comes up in people’s Facebook search results.
Make sure your group name and description contain keywords that people may use to find it.
For group name, you can use your brand name, product/service name or the common interest. You can include the location if it is a local community. For example, for a Pokémon Go player group, you can name it as “Pokémon Go Ohio USA”.
In group description, you need to tell people more about your group: what your group is about, what are the objectives or purposes, what members can or cannot do … For example, in the group “Pokémon Go Ohio USA”, you can tell people it is a group for all the Pokémon Go players who live or travel in Ohio to share stories, experience and tips.
3. Add tags
Tags are short key words that describe your group. With tags, you groups will be listed in the related topic in “Groups Discover“. When people view the list, they can find your groups.
As for your group name, you can add key words of your activities or industries, common interests or your location as tags. You can also view “Groups Discover” to get inspired and find popular tags for your groups. For each group, you can add up to 5 tags and you can change them anytime you want.
For “Pokémon Go” Group, you can add tags as “Pokemon”, “PokemonGo” “PokemonPlayer”, “Game”, “GameLover”… You can also use your geographic location as tags as “Ohio”, “USA”… By adding these tags, when people view the groups list of “Pokemon” or “Ohio”, they can see your group.
4. Use “Hashtag” in your group posts
A hashtag is a type of label used on Facebook, which makes it easier for users to find messages with a specific theme or content. Users create hashtags by placing “#” in front of a word or unspaced phrase (ex. #pokemon, #PokemonGoUSA). When users search for that hashtag, they will see each messages with that hashtag.
If your groups are public, don’t foget to add hashtags and encourage members to add hashtags in group posts. So when others search for the hashtags you group posts include, they will see your group posts and find your group.
